Banana Gun
Names can be misleading from Phoenix AZ
Banana Gun hails from Phoenix Arizona, and though the name may be silly, the music is anything but. These guys F'n rock! We explore their music for ourselves, then we interview the whole band, even the bass player, sort of.
Blackbeard's Tea Party
Pirate Folk Rock, Sea Shanties, and Protest Songs
York, England’s own Blackbeard’s Tea Party, a wild folk rock band who mash up sea shanties, traditional tunes, punk energy, and glam-level stage antics. From their nautical banger “Chicken on a Raft” to politically charged originals like “I Am People” and “England Bound,” this episode is packed with pirate rock riffs, distorted melodeon, and fiddle lines that feel like Gogol Bordello jamming with The Clash in a pub.
Boy Bandicoot
Neo-retro Alt-pop-rock from Cincinnati
Boy Bandicoot, is an Indie Alt-rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio. We love their melodies combined with some really deep, meaningful lyrics right alongside glorious nonsense. It's retro, it's new, it's damn fantastic.
Catchy as hell, Boy Bandicoot is destined to be much bigger than they are right now. And with a new LP on the horizon, BB is about to blow up! We consider ourselves quite fortunate to have the pleasure of discovering Boy Bandicoot at this early stage in their career, and to be able to interview Avery Benter for this show was every bit as fun as listening to his music.
The Corey Hotline
"Alt Popand roll from Calgary Canada
You may know The Corey hotline from a Simpsons reference, or you may actually remember when Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman had a hotline in the 1980's. Either way, that's where the name for this band comes from, so know they are a lot of fun. In this episode, JR introduces Gary to the The Corey Hotline bangers. Then in the second part, they interview teh band.
Cowboy Destroy
LA Slop Pop
The first ever band featured on the original BYNHO segment of Small Things Considered. This Episode features the original Bit, some updates and a call for questions for the Part 2 interview.
Crab Claw and DB Rielly
Two completely different acts in one show!
Both of these artists are a lot of fun, even when dealing with deep dark topics like…well, you should go listen to find out. And if you know either of these artists, please tell them to give it a listen, and reach out to us via email, cuz they have yet to respond to our inquiries!
Dead Billionaires

Dead Billionaires hails from Richmond Virginia. Warren Campbell is the frontman, and he joins us live after I get Gery all hyped up on all things DB. Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice:
Music for Oddballs and Outsiders — says "NO" to Spotify.
Dr. Sure's Unusual Practice is a five-piece synth-punk art rock band from Melbourne, Narrm, Australia — and they are exactly as described on their website: rock music for oddballs and outsiders. Henry Rollins put their 2024 album Total Reality in his top 10 of the year. Rolling Stone put it in their top 50. They've toured with King Gizzard, Tropical Fuckstorm, and Cosmic Psychos. And about a month ago, they pulled all their music off every streaming platform — Spotify, Apple Music, all of it — because they refuse to contribute to what they called "the war machine." You can find them at their Bandcamp. You can find them on YouTube. And now you can find them right here.
Four Thirty Four (434)
No fads, no gimmicks, no trends...
What happens when you mix Marine Corps drill cadence with heavy guitar riffs and a "no fads" attitude? You get 434, a band that is reclaiming the raw energy of rock and roll. And we have some serious role reversal going on in this one, Gary introduces JR to a new band he's never heard of (sort of)! In Part 2 of our feature on 434, we sit down with Mike and Scott to discuss their Central Virginia roots, why they chose a "number name" and the truth behind those Clutch comparisons. From the "whiskey fist" shock value to their "Rock and Roll Sermon" live shows, we dive deep into how this band stays authentic in a world of recyclable radio hits.
Freedom Quest, a Love Story
Its a band and a novel!, really
This one's different. No living room discovery session, no cold open with Gary going in blind. This episode starts with an email — one of the best pitch emails JR has ever received — and ends with a love story that spans 50 years, a religious cult in Hawaii, and a box of two-inch master tapes that almost didn't survive long enough to be heard.
The band is Freedom Quest. The album is Freedom Quest, streaming now on Spotify under Craig Ingraham's name. It was recorded in San Diego and Los Angeles in the mid-1970s by a group that included a 17-year-old David Benoit on piano — yes, that David Benoit — and broke up when the leader got busted for cannabis by a roadie working for the feds, right as they were about to shop the record to labels. Seven songs. Never released. The tapes sat in a box for decades.
The author is Debora Masterson. She was in that band. She is the person in the orange blouse on the left side of the album photo. She met Craig Ingraham when she was 15 and he was 18, and the two of them — fictionalized as Michael and Grace — are the love story at the center of her debut novel Freedom Quest: A Love Story.
Geese
No not That Geese, from Lancashire England
You may have heard of the NYC based Geese, but what about this little trio from Lancashire England? Probably not. JR found them from an NPR Music article that mentioned the much bigger and more well known Geese, but it was these Geese from the UK that caught his attention. They are totally cool with not being super well known, cuz that means work, and not the fun music making kind of work.
Guy Collins
South African Blues in Norway
Guy Collins is a guitarist, songwriter, and global vagabond drawing on Delta Blues, African roots, New Orleans funk, and Mississippi hill country — and he joins JR and Gary live from Norway.
JR introduces Gary to Guy Collins — a South African-born, Norway-based guitarist and songwriter who draws on Delta Blues, African roots, Zulu Maskandi, Malian Desert Blues, New Orleans funk, and Southern Gospel to create music that defies easy categorization. From raw two-piece blues under the name Mean Black Mamba, to a quirky Beck-channeling alter ego called Jeremiah Johnson, to the stirring anthem "Long Way to Freedom," this episode covers a career that spans continents, decades, and at least three completely different sounds.
In part one, JR walks Gary through Guy's global discography — recorded in lofts in Helsinki, under staircases in wooden houses, and in studios where trains rolled by mid-take — before landing on his personal favorite, "Long Way to Freedom." In part two, Guy himself joins from Norway to talk about growing up during apartheid in the "Seattle of South Africa," why his Norwegian wife is the reason he left Cape Town, playing the blues as an outsider, and what it means to channel Howlin' Wolf, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Beck all in the same discography.
Hasan and The Unseen
:LA based rock band
In our second episode, we feature Hasan and The Unseen, out of Los Angelas California. First you'll hear JR introduce Gary to all things HATU and then Hasan, Stewart, and Matt join us live for an in-depth interview. We'll discover why they are a band you've never heard of, and why you should be glad you've heard of them now.
Hook
Hard Rock from canada
Hook is no more, but they still rock! That's right, we are featuring a band that literally JUST BROKE UP, due to personal reasons. They were happy enough to give us permission to play their music on our show, since they are proud of what they created, and they should be. But shorts? Really?
Hugo Stranger and the Rattlers
Australian Surf Rock
Hugo Stranger and The rattlers are a cool-ass surf rock band from Australia. We originally featured them in an early BYNHO segment on Small Things Considered. We are replaying that episode here while JR is out of town at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh Scotland. If you know Hugo, let them know you want us to interview them on an upcoming episode of the show!
The Hushdown
Art Rock from Baltimore MD
The Hushdown is Jeremy Hicks-Kachik and Kali Hinkel, and we explore tracks from their newest album, Inherit The Night, and then we interview the pair from their home studio near Baltimore Maryland. We talk about the new album, touring, making songs for movies and TV, their advice for younger musicians, and so much more!
Joan Smith adn the Jane does
Fuzzy femme rock from Toronto
Don't let the name fool you, Joan Smith and The Jane Does are somebody. They are coming on strong in the Canadian Rock scene, based out of Toronto. Jane's vocals, dirty guitar, along with Tom's edge of insanity lead guitar bring to life a sound that is both 90's alternative rock and as fresh as the falling snow. If you are a fan of Nirvana, Queens of The Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine, or just good solid rock, you are going to love JSATJD.
Joudy
Pronounced "Howdy"
Joudy is a three-piece New York City based Shoegaze, heavy grungy rock band originally from Venezuela. They were kind of a big deal in Venezuela before they had to flee the country in the late 2010s, for obvious reasons. They reunited here in the states and continued making music in a whole new place, with new politics, and a new mindset. JR and Gary explore several of their songs in preparation for the big interview. And in the second half of today's show, you get to meet Diego Ramirez, the lead singer and guitarist. We interviewed Diego over Zoom from his home in NYC. Diego even had his video producer, Gabriel there to join in the conversation.
MJT
Yes, the J actually stands for jazz
Three brothers from Long Island. Started playing jazz together when the youngest was eight. Won Amateur Night at the Apollo — multiple times. Opened for Slash and Living Color. Endorsed by Paul Reed Smith. Most played song on Spotify: 15,000 streams. The band is MJT. They were the Michael Jazz Trio until they decided they'd rather be like the Foo Fighters. The jazz crowd was not thrilled. They did it anyway.

Seismic State
Hard working rockers from New Zealand
From New Zealand, Seismic State is a hard working rock band with but a few great songs! You'll learn all about them in this episode, you'll hear their top songs, and you'll meet the band behind the music.
Uncle Ben's Remedy
Not your Gramma's Appalachian Music
JR kicks this one off differently — no intro, no bio, no warning. He just lets Uncle Ben's Remedy walk through the door and introduce themselves with "Jesus Never Took the Wheel." Gary's first words: "I think they're the remedy for sobriety." And we're off.
Uncle Ben's Remedy is a five-piece roots rock band out of Western New York who sound like they were raised somewhere between a honky-tonk and a bluegrass festival in the Allegheny hills. Boogie-woogie piano, chicken-pickin' guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, and some of the most inventive harmonic choices Gary has ever heard from a band playing this kind of music. And then there's the songs — rowdy drinking anthems that somehow make room for a tearjerker about loss and leaving, and a lyric about driving between the mustard and the mayonnaise that might be the greatest road song line ever written.
In part one, JR walks Gary through the full range: Jesus Never Took the Wheel, Paradise, Drink to Remember, Hard Times, Gone Home, Black Jacket, Pedal to the Metal, Never Get Caught, and the song you absolutely cannot leave without hearing — All Hat No Cattle.
In part two, Ben and Sean join from Revolver Records in Buffalo (mid-session, phone barely charged, Josh the drummer wandering in from downstairs) to talk about what it actually means to be a Western New York band that sounds like the South, how Sean's master's degree in music is secretly responsible for all those chord progressions that keep throwing Gary off, who sings that haunting harmony on Gone Home, and why the best divorce song in Buffalo was recorded with the songwriter's wife.
Watch on YouTube to see the lyrics on screen for every song.
Whyte Noise
Scotland Brings the noise!
JR went to the Edinburgh Fringe and stumbled on to the Royal Mile and was immediately greeted with the warmest Scottish welcome possible. Real Scottish musicians, a family band, playing traditional Scottish folk tune alongside their wonderful original tunes. JR knew immediately this band was perfect for BYNHO. A month later, they are done busking at Fringe and were ready to sit down with JR and Gary to talk about their music, songwriting, busking at the Fringe, being multi-instrumentalists, how Scotland should be its own country, and their opinion of JR's Kilt.
